DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The O

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Handbag

INSPIRATION:
Experimenting with wood and plexiglass I wanted to give a new dimension to handbags, escaping from the classic fashion standards and introducing structures of modern industrial design. Strongly influenced by my studies and the "Modern" movement, I design under the precept that form follows function. My work is characterized by original construction, materiality, (un)transparency and geometry.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Wooden and other rigid surfaces that are rarely used in fashion and travel accessories, create new forms and shapes . The patterns are not printed on fabrics but created by the texture and the very materiality of these surfaces. Wood, as a rigid surface, retains the shape of the bag in contrast to the fabric which is deformed by the weight of the contents of the bag.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The bag consists of two rigid surfaces (wood, plexiglass, acrylic) 4 mm - 6 mm thick, depending the material used. These surfaces are tied to the inner fabric pouch with a leather cord. The fabric is sewn onto the wood as if it is "bolting". This way the customer is given the option to change the color of the fabric or remove it in order to wash it The wooden surfaces can be pressed with different colored veneers on each side so that the bag can be worn both ways, allowing the wearer to change the appearance of the bag.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in January 2014 in Athens and was first exhibited in " DESIGN LAB ATHENS 2014" in April 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The materials for the panels were selected due to their increased resistance to bending. Other characteristics, such as the transparency of plexiglass and the layering of plywood transform the bag's appearence, although the design remains the same. The wooden pannels were cut by a CNC cutter, smoothened and polished with a protective clear finish.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Product dimensions: Width 280 mm x Height 440 mm x Depth 40 mm. Weight: 850gr.

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The aim was to design a handbag using materials, that are commonly used in architecture. The research concerned mostly furniture design and wood finish.

CHALLENGE:
It was a challenge to design a handbag using materials, that are commonly used in architecture. It was quite intriguing to transform a handbag into something new and modern. This design opens up to new materials and rigid surfaces, shaping the bag. The wooden pannels must be formed in detail so they are cut by a CNC cutter.
