DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Hamon

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Clock

INSPIRATION:
I have interests in the design of clock as a clue to explore philosophies of time.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Hamon is a clock made of a flat round chinaware and water. The hands of the clock rotate and gently ruffle the water every second. The behavior of the water surface is a continuous overlap of the ripples produced from past to present. The uniqueness of this clock is to show not only the present time but also the accumulation and attenuation of time which is indicated by the water surface changing every moment. Hamon is named after Japanese word 'hamon', which means ripples.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
With light, the ripples reflect it and projects another ripple on a wall.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in June 2013. First model (with black chinaware and gold clock hands) was exhibited in July and second model (with white chinaware and black clock hands) in December at University of Tokyo in Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Hamon is made of a flat and round chinaware with a hole on its center and a clock movement. The movement is controlled by an external micro controller because the electronic board inside the movement get flooded to be useless. The movement attached at the back of the chinaware is coated with sealant.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
400 mm Diameter, 60 mm Height.

TAGS:
clock, water, ripple, fluid, time

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ancient people invented clocks using natural phenomena such as movement of astronomical objects, fall of water or combustion of materials. Thus they interpreted time as whether it circles or it has the end. Then how about modern and mechanical clocks void of concrete natural phenomena? My research is to focus on the connections between design of clock and philosophy of time and to explore philosophy of time by designing the phenomenon itself that clock marks the present time.

CHALLENGE:
Waterproofing electric modules of clock.
