DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
FLUX table

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
Mathematical rules behind their formation of Islamic art and Architecture

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Mehran Gharleghi and Amin Sadeghy from Studio INTEGRATE have created “Flux Table” within their exploration of fusing the legacy of Islamic art with contemporary modes of computation. The intricate geometry and pattern of this table is derived from a basic "Toranj", a mathematical pattern used in Iranian Architecture; from which a smooth transition between two layers of strict geometric pattern is constructed. The generated form is manufactured using digital fabrication technologies.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
evolution of culture in geometry and its function

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
the project started in September 2012 to Jun 2013 all in London

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
CNC miling technology on high dense foam with Polyurethane color. The end product is a PU coated dense foam table.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
very light, with the dimension of 180 x 100 x 80 cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Mehran Gharleghi and Amin Sadeghy from Studio INTEGRATE have created “Flux Table” within their exploration of fusing historically rooted geometries with contemporary modes of computation. The intricate form and pattern of this table is derived from a basic "Toranj", a mathematical pattern used in Iranian Architecture; from which a smooth transition between two layers of strict geometric pattern is constructed. The geometrical pattern at the top surface fuses to the bottom layer through a series of multi-directional arches. The generated form is manufactured using digital fabrication.

CHALLENGE:
culturally evolving typology that existed in historical precedent using existing and historical morphology coupled with contemporary technique with new mode of design. reduce of production cost and creating smooth transition between two strictly geometrical layers to be able to keep the historical relevant.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
studio INTEGRATE

PROFILE:
Integrate is an international architectural studio, located in London. It was founded by Mehran Gharleghi and Amin Sadeghy in 2009. Integrate is interested in designing new spaces through a new methodology that integrates aesthetics and performance. We consider the human sense of beauty and comfort as the most imperative element that forms space. We strive to achieve new qualitative and performative spaces via a careful examination of exterior and interior forces that effect the built environment. These forces include site characteristics, micro- and macroclimatic situations, spatial criteria, material capacity and local techniques and resources. Employing new sophisticated design and analysis tools along with rigorous physical material studies allow us to synthesize design and performance, establishing new relationships with the built environment and ultimately leading to novel spatial experiences. Mehran Gharleghi received his Master of Architecture from the Emergent Technologies and Design Master Programme at the Architectural Association. He is an architect and researcher. He has been collaborating with prominent architects in Iran since 2002 and recently collaborated with the award winning Plasma Studio in London and now working in Foster and Partners. He has been jury member in Diploma unit 7, intermediate unit 7&8 since 2008. He lectured at the Smart Geometry09, AA Fab Research Cluster Symposium and ACADIA 2009. Mehran Gharleghi has been interviewed in the book entitled ‘ Conversation With the Young Architect’ in which he seeks the current role of young architect through a conversation with award winnig architect Nasrine Faghih. Mehran Gharleghi and Amin Sadeghy exhibited their ‘Responsive Pneumatic Systems’ research at London’s Design Festival 2009.
