DESIGN NAME:
Relax

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Coffee Set

INSPIRATION:
Unfortunately, people seem to have less and less time to cultivate personal relationships these days, which is why I chose it as a prime factor in the design of my set. I want to bring back this neglected custom. The relationship strengthening purpose of the object's use manifests itself in the complementary shapes of the concrete and porcelain items. The ensemble of concrete and porcelain creates an exciting contrast and the textures of these materials influence and highlight each other.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of the set is to encourage the nourishment of relationships. The way the shapes fit into each other symbolizes the importance of personal relationships and how people complement one another. The two materials create an exciting contrast which can be interpreted as an allegory of the many facets of the human character.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The defined way of using the coffee set encourages people to chat while having coffee, and its concrete tray functions as a container as well. The tray not only serves as a storing place for the porcelain cups, but is also able to hold other coffee-related accessories such as spoons or tea-biscuits.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in September 2012 in Budapest and finished in December 2012 in Budapest, and was exhibited in Iskola (Budapest) at the Selection art exhibition in May 2013.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The first step is turning the cup, the sugar bowl, the jug and the kiln furniture, followed by the creation of slipcasting forms for the plaster mold. Then comes the carving of the handle by hand and the creation of the tray's mold. The tray is produced by running moulding and its slipcasting form is made up of an inner silicon form and an outer plaster form. These are followed by concrete slipcasting then porcelain slipcasting and finally by applying the glaze to the objects and firing them.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The coffee set started out as a school project. I researched into usable materials, applicable technologies and shapes. The coffee set is supposed to give a shared experience, should be easy to clean, easy to handle and ergonomic. My research was primarily empirical and for this I used the library and the internet. The end results are precise and the elements fit easily together and I feel that form and function have an ideal relation and the shapes and materials react and reflect to each other.

CHALLENGE:
I find it really exciting to use materials in new and unusual situations, but only if the associated object retains its functionality. The reactions these materials give through these experiments lead to new ideas and help to reimagine the original object. The designer needs to incorporate new technologies into her trade of tools and utilize them, as this encourages the development of products and new, innovative solutions.
