DESIGN NAME:
COSS

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Stationery Supply

INSPIRATION:
It is not is to carry many stationary supplies at the same time. Many people lost pens, rulers and so on, so it is easy to see abandoned supplies in school or office. One day, I saw magnets which is gathered automatically, and seeing magnetics, I realized that gathering supplies using it would be a good solution. With COSS, it will be comfortable to carry many stationary. In addition, stationary supplies will not be lost because they gathered automatically when there are in close distance.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
'COSS' is the a tool which is consist of four stationary supplies, a pen, a sharp pencil, a knife, and a ruler without a case. Each part not only can be easily separated, but also can be the one tool using magnet which is embedded in each supplies. Also, each tool is square shaped so that can be gripped easily. Especially, square shaped knife is easier and more safe to use than rounded one, because rounded shaped knife can be slippery so that can be dangerous for user.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Carrying many stationary supplies together cause lost of them, but COSS can solve the problem. COSS is a tool which has four functions such as knife, sharp pencil, pen, ruler. Usually, it is one tool but it can be separated easily while using each of them. It is no mandatory to carry four stationary supplies at the same time. Any part of COSS can be carried separately, because it has no special case but would be attached each other automatically. Also, with square sahpe, it is easy to grip.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project sarted in May 2013 and finished June 2013 in Korea, and was showed in an internet site, Yanko design. Also, it was awarded as silver at Spark design award.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Cover of COSS is made of square shaped plastic which is not fragile. It is convenient and not slippery to grip using 3 faces of square. At the end of the each stationary supply, magnets are embedded. So it is easy to attach and detach each part, and if it is in close distance, it can be gathered automatically. It means that there is no chance to lose each stationary supply. Also, the magnetic can revolve so that each part can be attached in any direction regardless north and south.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Meterial : plastic, stainless, magnet 20mm X 20mm X 150mm (stationary supply size)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I researched what problems people have in common using stationary supplies by asking some question. The problem which was mostly nominated was losing stationary supplies. That brings me an idea of gathering some stationary supplies. So to make the product, first I did brainstroming and sketch. Second, I chose materials, and then designed 2D model through the Auto CAD. After that, using Rhinoceros, finally I designed 3D model. Also, using Photoshop and After Effects, I made a video clip.

CHALLENGE:
The project was focused on increasing efficiency of carrying many stationary supplies. The most hadest thing was finding a solution for gathering four stationary supplies in one product. Fortunately, I found a bunch of magnets and it brings me a great idea. Embedding magnetic was the first solution for gethering supplies. However, magnet has north and south, so sometimes they pushed each other not gethered. It was the second problem, but making magnet revolve, I could solve the problem again.
