DESIGN NAME:
1hand plate

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Plate

INSPIRATION:
I got the idea and inspiration to the form from a shrimp. The idea to the function came from countless of receptions, where you stand and do not know where to put your glass and plate, while networking and exchangning business cards. You should be able to wear your glass and your plate with one hand, while you greet people with the other hand.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
1hand plate: Be the better server. Carry your glass of wine and your plate with one hand only. The plate is light-weighted and its unique shape of a shrimp lies safely in the palm of your hand. Very useful for all kind of events. Parties, receptions, celebrations and more. Always have a free hand to put new delicious food on the plate, a free hand for shaking hands or just a free hand for gestures. Impress your guests and let them enjoy the sudden ease of a standing buffet.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in the Faroe Islands in june 2008, and was finished in august 2012 in Denmark. It was exhibited at the Ambiente, Frankfurt, by Fabrikators (www.fabrikators.com).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
I found pictures of shrimp, and got them scanned into AutoCAD, where the plate was designed. Then I designed a 3D model in SketchUp. I made a 3D print of the plate where I could get the model in my hand, and test it with a wine glass until the plate and glass fit. The dish is now made in "melamine" and has a dimension 235 x 210 x 10 mm, but may of course be embodied in other materials such as ceramic, wood or any other material.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I found pictures of shrimp, and got them scanned into AutoCAD, where the plate was designed. Then I designed a 3D model in SketchUp. I made a 3D print of the plate where I could get the model in my hand, and test it with a wine glass until the plate and glass fit. The dish is now made in "melamine" and has a dimension 235 x 210 x 10 mm, but may of course be embodied in other materials such as ceramic, wood or any other material. The next step is to produce the plate in degradeable corn starch, so that it may be used and thrown into nature without contaminating. The plate is food approved and dishwasher safe.

CHALLENGE:
Untill now the hardest part of the process has been to find buyers of the plate. This may be due to the global financial crisis. The idea is to get it published and sold. So far the production is in China by Fabrikators (www.fabrikators.com). There are only a few copies made in melamin and wood.
