INSPIRATION:
- The philosophy of Zen thought. - Reduction of sizes and shapes. - Plainness and simplicity. - Meaningful, but timeless and natural. - Unostentatious & Beauty.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Zen is a new and fully customizable spotlight, to meet any customers technical need and provides, additionally, the aesthetic beauty of an authentic piece of interior design. Zen is one of the smallest spotlights in the market. Thus, Zen is much better integrated in the environments where it is installed, without generating and invasive presence. The design of Zen is based on timeless forms, oriented towards functionality and simplicity, hunting for a lasting, serene and ostentation free beauty.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
ZEN represents an improvement in consumption, light quantity, performance and sustainability, in a smaller size and with a new beauty. ZEN is designed to take all lighting applications carried out until now by the traditional QR-111 lamp. In comparison with the last, ZEN is compact, light and significantly smaller. Thus, ZEN is a spotlight much better integrated in the environments where it is installed, without generating and invasive presence to the places where it is located.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Ribarroja del Turia, 2012-2013.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Lighting Products and Fixtures Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
ZEN is a sustainable and environmentally friendly product, as it is completely made of aluminium, it has easily separable parts for recycling and it has been design to consist of the least possible number of parts. Furthermore, the aluminium used in ZEN is 100% recyclable by a process consuming just 5% extra energy than it was used to obtain the original primary aluminium.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
ZEN is one of the smallest spotlights in the market (1,16Kg y 0,006m3). This luminaire stands out by the novelty of its customizable panels; they can be supplied in any natural wood, colours, patterns, logos, etc. With a consumption of only 12W, ZEN LED can produce up to 1200 lumens. This great performance derives, in large part, from the unique design of the new ZEN heat sink, achieving to cool the LED and keeping it within is optimum working range of temperature.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Zen was designed taking as a reference the natural geometries. In order to create a heat sink that effectively achieves the required cooling of the LED, the designing team focused on the shapes of cactuses and other plants, maximizing the contact surface with the air, thus lessening the heat. Besides, the Japanese Zen gardens served aesthetically as a base to achieve the beauty of the heat sink, its integration with the device, and the aesthetic continuity with the rest of the spotlight.

CHALLENGE:
Until now, spotlights did not have temperature limitation, and their size was adjusted into bigger light sources. With Zen we needed to forget the historical spotlight design to create a small device, but certainly able to work in a temperature as low as required by the LED. We carried out virtual simulations to achieve the best dissipation in every possible position of the spotlight. Moreover, the heat sink was treated as an aesthetic element in the spotlight, leaving behind its technical condition.
