Balance Wooden Spoon by Christopher Han

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Balance

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Wooden Spoon

INSPIRATION:
I wanted to make a functional sculpture piece which will enhance the user's daily life. And the inspiration came to me when I was searching for a beauty in curve, balance and proportion.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Ideally shaped and balanced for cooking, this hand-carved spoon from a pear tree was my attempt to redefine a cookware design using one of the oldest material utilized by mankind. The bowl of the spoon was carved asymmetrically to fit in the corner of a cooking pot. The Handle was shaped with a subtle curve, which makes an ideal shape for a right-handed user. A strip of purpleheart insert adds little bit of character and weight on the handle part of the spoon. And the flat surface on the bottom of the handle allows the spoon to stand on a table by itself.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project was started on December 2012 and finished in February 2013 in Brooklyn, New York.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This spoon was hand-carved from a pear tree with a strip of purpleheart. I've used a beeswax and mineral oil mixture for the finish.
