DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Ten To Sen テントセン (Point and Line)

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Seating and Waste Receptacle

INSPIRATION:
Mouvements de l'air by Etienne-Jules Marey

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
These park fixtures, produced through geometric extrusion of points and lines form elements in the landscape that are at once iconographic, ornamental, and functional. They are assembled out of simple lamination of standardized components fabricated out of sheet material to produce unique formal characteristics. Each design prototype is considered a meditation on the manipulation of points and lines to develop the final form.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
These park fixtures, produced through geometric extrusion of points and lines form elements in the landscape that are at once iconographic, ornamental, and functional. They were designed to be mass-produced for distribution in Cherokee Square Park and its adjacent main street in downtown Guthrie, Kentucky creating visual and experiential continuity between the historic main street and this new park development.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
D.O.T.S. designed Cherokee Square Park and its fixtures in 2008 as part of the 2007 Urban Reformation Plan of downtown Guthrie, Kentucky. The fixture prototypes were fabricated for the 2010 exhibition Ten To Sen テントセン (Point and Line) and are an example of the design research D.O.T.S. has been focusing on using standardized components to produce unique formal characteristics. Each prototype is considered a meditation on the manipulation of points and lines to develop the design. The prototypes have been donated to the permanent collection of the Transportation Museum in downtown Guthrie.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The waste receptacle and seating were conceived as functional elements extruded from a horizontal plane and developed using digital modeling software. The structural framework of both pieces is generated by projecting a linear pattern onto a lofted surface, which is then extruded and thickened to accommodate the material properties of sheet material and account for structural soundness. A total of 5 unique profiles were cut out of ¾” sheet material by a CNC milling machine and then laminated to create the final forms mounted to a base to suggest future site integration.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
2076 mm x 3073 mm x 813 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Ten To Sen テントセン (Point and Line) is example of the design research Design Office Takebayashi Scroggin (D.O.T.S.) focuses on using standardized components to produce unique formal characteristics. These park fixtures, produced through geometric extrusion of points and lines form elements in the landscape that are at once iconographic, ornamental, and functional. These elements will be mass-produced for distribution in Cherokee Square Park and its adjacent main street in downtown Guthrie, Kentucky creating visual and experiential continuity between the historic main street and this new park development.

CHALLENGE:
The design challenge for us is to produce something functional with unique formal characteristics out of standardized components and simple construction logic. As we moved from the computer to assembly, we found that issues of connection, material imperfection, and human error began to surface. Instead of trying to mask error or compromise the aesthetics, we responded to these challenges with design solutions. The design model was allowed to adjust and evolve, as opposed to adhering to the original model or any “ideal” form. This process generated greatly improved the final product.
