Interview with Ivan Paul B. Abanilla at Monday 11th of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
IA: The main idea is to build a table adaptable to the user needs. Which is giving the best idea, solution and realization of the problem. In certain situations, we get the need to improve.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
IA: My main focus is to perform a solution adept to existing configurations of lounge/bed and comfort chairs. But mainly is to have my own working table to replace the wooden chair I am using.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
IA: To provide further development and have the idea realize.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
IA: It took me 1 year and 7 months from idea to concept.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
IA: I designed this product to fit my needs as my room doesn't fit a proper working table and also identify certain ergonomic problem. Often times we use a stool or a chair beside the table. Which i do.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
IA: Currently it has not been produced but to be worked on that direction. Yes, I am planning to lease the production rights but would depend on the market area.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
IA: Due to the need and promote continuous improvement.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
IA: Day to day activities have somehow brought up the design concept up to now. Working with design oriented colleagues have added up some influences.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
IA: The design idea would fit well on consumer and personal use since it is mostly having the same needs in relation to comfort.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
IA: Different approach in providing solution which is more to hands free use and operation.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
IA: The name Ergo-Table describes more of the objective which is human form function.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
IA: Use of sketches and CAD software.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
IA: The no. of features which are usable to aid its function in ergonomics.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
IA: As it is more on the design conceptual stage, more towards my close friends and family on sharing the idea.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
IA: Validating the design, and getting the proof of concept in its track.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
IA: Data gathered was more on individuals preference and more or less similar problem which will improve ergonomic needs of the user.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
IA: Challenges is more on integrating the design into having a single/whole part with the bed.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
IA: By having to realize that the design/idea would be suitable to others and get some feed backs.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
IA: Learning the importance of moving forward thru hardships.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
IA: Yes, One thing I would like to add is to thank my family, somehow I want to share this award to them. and I want to give acknowledgement. Thanks.
